CHAPTER SIX

CALEB HAD BEEN tiptoeing around her for the last three days. They’d virtually done nothing apart from eat food, take Tristan to kids’ club for a few hours, walk around the resort and relax in the shade.

She’d finished three books. If she kept going like this she’d have to wander around the pool and steal someone else’s book while they were in swimming.

They’d slept in the over-water bungalow for two nights and then eventually gone back to the beach bungalow after Tristan had tried sleeping like a starfish. Tristan had slept in his own room and Caleb had cuddled in behind her with his arms around her.

When they walked around the resort he held her hand or had his arm around her shoulder.

The waiter arrived with breakfast as usual. Because she felt so rested she’d been up early this morning and was ravenous. Caleb had gone for a run along the beach and came back with the sweat dripping from him.

He emerged from the shower towelling his hair and grinned at her heaped plate of scrambled eggs with toast. Tristan was lining up all his sausages in a row to match his toast soldiers. ‘Is there anything left?’

She shook her head. ‘We decided to put you on a diet. Coffee only.’

He laughed and poured himself a cup before finding his breakfast hidden under a silver dome. ‘Better eat up quickly, Tristan, we’re going snorkelling this morning.’

Tristan’s eyes lit up. ‘Snorkelling? Yeah! Will we find Nemo?’

Caleb gave her a little wink. ‘I have it on good authority that there definitely should be a whole school of Nemos where we’re going.’

Tristan opened the picture book they’d bought him of all the different fish around the island. He pointed to the bright orange and white clown fish. ‘That’s Nemo,’ he said seriously to Addison. ‘That’s the one I’m looking for.’

‘Doesn’t he sometimes hide in the sea anemones?’

Tristan looked over his shoulder. ‘Only if a barracuda is about. They can be very bad.’

Addison nodded. He was so serious. He was going to love today.

She flung some things together into a bag.

Caleb appeared behind her. ‘Are you sure you’re okay with this? You don’t need to come if you don’t want to.’

She grabbed her floppy hat. ‘It’s only two hours and it’s quite close by. I think it’ll be fine. If I don’t feel well, I’ll let you know.’

There were eight other people waiting to board the white boat to the nearby coral reef. They were a happy bunch, all clutching onto small snorkels and goggles. The journey across the lagoon to one of the small atolls only took five minutes. Once they arrived they had the option of joining the snorkelling or staying on the nearby beach.

Addison had dressed carefully. She was wearing a swimming costume, black with white panels at the side, which gave the illusion that her waist hadn’t thickened quite as much as it had. She wouldn’t slip her dress off until the last minute, and hopefully, since she’d be in waist-high water, nothing would be noticed.
